The Chugach Region in south central Alaska spans approximately 15,625 square miles and comprises seven coastal tribal communities with a combined population of approximately 2,200 Alaska Natives or American Indians. The entire area has historically enjoyed abundant natural resources, particularly fisheries. Subsistence remains a vital aspect of life—economically and culturally.
Our vision is to revitalize the traditional Chugach Native culture and language. The goal is to make Sugpiaq/ Eyak history and heritage a part of the regular school curriculum with support and direction from our Elders’ traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).
